SERVING THE LION AND THE LAMB, NOT AN ELEPHANT OR A DONKEY

BY ERIC ROCHESTER - FOUNDER, PRESIDENT, AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SENDING PROJECT

As we approach the mid-term elections, this blog post is meant to be a reminder that regardless of what political affiliation any of us might have, as Jesus followers our primary allegiance is to Him! We don’t primarily or ultimately serve an elephant or a donkey; above all else we serve the Lamb who was slain and the Lion of Judah!

Our worship of the Lion and the Lamb should inform and influence our perspectives and activities in the political and governmental realms, not the other way around.

There are many societal issues that are being addressed by government. Some of those issues don’t boil down to partisan politics; at the foundational level they are battles between good and evil. So, let’s remember the words of Ephesians 6:12:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Pray, pray, pray. And get involved in politics and government as the Lord leads you. And, of course, vote. Vote according to your allegiance to the eternal Lion of Judah and the flawless Lamb who was slain, not a donkey or an elephant which are temporal, limited, and flawed.

Your involvement at the local, county, and state level of government as a follower of Jesus living out your faith can help the Lord’s Kingdom advance in your neighborhood and throughout our very blessed and great nation. We need Jesus followers to be involved in the domains of politics and governments, just like other domains of our society. Just remember that your #1 identity is in Jesus! And then let that influence your other roles in life, work, and ministry.

It’s a scary world in which we live. Just know that whatever happens in and through the government (of the USA or any other nation) is not the larger picture.

God knows the larger story, vision, and plan. And He will continue to accomplish His mission however the government operates in each nation of the world.

As we, the Body of Christ, live day-to-day deeply believing that our #1 identity is in Jesus, this allows us to experience unity in the Lord and the advancement of His Kingdom (not earthly kingdoms).

So, if you’re a Jesus-follower who is a Democrat or a Republican, that’s a part of your identity, but it isn’t your #1 identity, and your #1 identity should influence ALL other aspects of your identity.

As we go about the next several days and, in the context of these mid-term elections, connect with any political party affiliation we might have, let’s make sure to keep our #1 allegiance to the Lamb who was slain and the Lion of Judah! May He be glorified above all else!

We worship you Jesus! You are the Lion of Judah and the Lamb who was slain!

Revelation 5:5: “Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Revelation 5:8: “And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.”
