During his college days at Wheaton College, Bruce worked as director of Young Life in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. In 1983, Bruce moved to the inner city of Kansas City and began working with an urban ministry. That job led to a teaching position with De La Salle High School, an alternative school for urban youth.
From 1986 to 1997, he worked with a suburban church as a teacher and pastor. As a pastor, Bruce led numerous mission trips. During this period, Bruce earned his Master of Divinity degree and Doctor of Ministry degree, focusing on leadership development.
Bruce founded Freedom Fire in 1997. Since that time, the ministry has expanded to include two sister organizations: Freedom Works, focused on holistic care, and Shalom Retreat Center, a 120-acre retreat facility near Mound City, Kansas.
In 2009, Bruce helped start Freedom Covenant Church. In 2014, he also helped launch Worship Wagon, a mobile church dedicated to reaching and serving the nomadic homeless community.
A verse that has meant a lot to me lately is Psalm 71:18. As I am living in the “Sage Stage” of life, my desire to help the next generation grow in Godly leadership.

Since 1982, I’ve spent my career assisting people in funding Christian ministries through biblical, Holy Spirit-led charitable gift and estate planning services. My passion is helping people experience the joy of giving by using their God-given assets for the greatest Kingdom impact.
My wife, Sharla, and I live in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and I travel around the eastern half of the country providing people — and their advisors — with tax-wise gift planning options in light of the biblical model of generous giving and stewardship.
A Day When All the Nations Worship
In Revelation 7:9a, a heavenly scene is described: “After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb” (NLT).
This isn’t just a hoped-for future; it’s promised! That’s why Wycliffe Bible Translators will continue to serve with the global body of Christ to advance Bible translation so people can encounter God through His Word. It’s why we won’t stop working until people from every language can understand the Bible and be transformed.
You are a part of making God’s name made known among the nations through Bible translation. Thank you for praying, giving, advocating, serving and engaging your church to be part of what God is doing!
Why Bible Translation?
The Bible is one of the oldest and most popular books of all time. But is it just a book, or is it much more?
Like you, we believe that the Bible is God’s Word to us — something that everyone should be able to understand for themselves. Bible translation is critical for real transformation: When people encounter Jesus through Scripture in their own language, lives often change in amazing ways!
That’s why Wycliffe Bible Translators USA exists: to work with churches, communities and partner organizations until everyone can access God’s Word in a language that touches their hearts. We’ll keep on working so all people — speaking or signing more than 7,400 languages worldwide — can have the Bible in the formats and languages that serve them best.
