Marcus Oatis  will share with us about Providence Art KC.
Marcus Oatis
A vision of flourishing children is at the epicenter of Providence School of Arts. In 2008, Mr. Oatis began praying to the Lord about how he could serve Him. In the space of reflection and solitude, Mr. Oatis received his calling to start a school. In Luke 18:15-17, Jesus tells his disciples, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for such belongs the kingdom of God.” As Mr. Oatis began to survey the culture of Kansas City, he noticed that education is an area that for many communities stifles flourishing for children. In 2012, Mr. Oatis began writing the vision for Providence School of Arts. This school would be known for its rootedness in the Gospel, the fostering of creativity and joy through a Fine & Performing Arts program, and an academic curriculum individually tailored to meet the needs of each student. In 2016, Mr. Oatis moved forward with the launch of the school. Despite his valiant effort and the encouragement Mr. Oatis received from the community, he was only able to recruit 3 students and raise $20,000. Despite this disheartening result, Mr. Oatis believed wholeheartedly in the work that God had called him to do and humbly chose to walk in faith. As the school continued on this journey, $20,000 turned into $70,000, 3 kids turned into 7 kids. With each subsequent year, Providence’s enrollment and financial support continued to grow. Word began to spread about Providence’s unique approach to learning and school culture and its success in helping students close learning gaps and, at times, exceed them.

“We are grateful for the gospel-centric education which helps to support the foundations of her faith. Additionally, the arts have helped our daughter become a confident contributor in the classroom and in every area of life. She loves attending Providence for all the opportunities she gets to perform and create. Additionally we have seen our son’s self-confidence sky-rocket. He feels safe, loved, and important at school!” – Katie (School Parent)

In 2021, Providence received an answer to many prayers. We received a $200,000 gift to support the growth of our school. This gift allowed us to increase our capacity to serve more students, pursue accreditation (awarded in 2023), and expand our development efforts.

Kansas City-native Marcus Oatis began his dance training at Ailey Camp and also studied at Kansas City Ballet, Smith Sisters Dance Studio, The Center Dance, the Ailey School, and Paseo Academy of the Fine and Performing Arts. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on scholarship, earning his BM in Music and Music Performance graduating in 2005.

In 2008, Oatis joined Kansas City Ballet under the direction of William Whitener. Oatis’ repertoire included Jessica Lang’s Splendid Isolation III, Val Caniparoli’s Lambarena, Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun, Ib Andersen’s Romeo and Juliet (Paris), José Limón’s The Moor’s Pavane (The Moor), George Balanchine’s Serenade, and Todd Bolender’s The Nutcracker (Russian). He additionally performed in works by Bruce Marks, Peter Martins, Robert Hill, Twyla Tharp, and Yuri Possokhov.

Oatis has also danced with Owen/Cox Dance Group, Arcanium Dance Project, Central Dance Theatre, and Omaha Dance Project.

After retiring from his performing career in 2012, Oatis became the Lower School Principal and a Campus Manager at Kansas City Ballet School. During this time, “he was able to codify the Lower School curriculum, [to] increase enrollment in school year and summer programming at the satellite campus, and to create and implement professional development opportunities for the teaching faculty.”

He has also taught at Kansas City Ballet School, Omaha Academy of Ballet, Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, Ailey Camp, and University of Missouri-Kansas City.

In 2013, he founded Providence School of Arts a private Christian School, of which he is still executive director. Oatis believes in “the cognitive, physical, and emotional benefits of arts education and believes in providing families with viable faith based educational opportunities.

Marcus emailed me the following:  I have been reflecting on how God has always wanted to be our King and how we place other things before Him.  See John 18-19.
