Roy Moran will update with us about New Generation ministry.
Inline imageInline image
Roy was born in Tokyo, Japan and graduated from high school in Honolulu Hawaii. That vagabond lifestyle can be blamed on the United States Air Force which Roy’s dad Ed served for 30 years.

Roy is a graduate of Baylor University with a BA in Greek and Dallas Theological Seminary with a Th. M.

Roy served on the launch team of Fellowship Bible Church of Park Cities (now Fellowship Dallas), and served First Covenant Church (now New Covenant Bible Church) for six years.

In 1988 Roy moved to KC and worked in the HQ of FCA for four years. Leaving FCA Roy his wife Candy and a group of 4 others started Shoal Creek Community Church where Roy currently serves as the directional leader and spiritual literacy advocate.

Over the last 23 years Shoal Creek has grown to over a 1000 people thru reaching people who aren’t used to going to church.

Roy has pioneered the concept of the “Hybrid Church,” which finds the synergy between the traditional attractional strategy and the principles found in disciple making movements (DMM). The Hybrid strategy highlights a “Come/Go” aspect that allows the gospel to move freely away from the physical space sometime referred to as a church.

In 2005, Roy began a global search for a scalable model of ministry. That journey led him to David Watson and Victor John and their work among the Bhojpuri. Roy and David became fast friends as David mentored Roy in understanding and applying multiplicative disciple making.

Over the past 20 years Roy has pioneered the idea of a local western church applying DMM principles. He authored, Spent Matches in 2014 to add the conversation of  Disciple-making Movements and the local church in the west.

In 2010, Roy joined the Miraculous Movement team written about in Jerry Trousdale’s book Miraculous Movement.  He was a founding board chairman of New Generations which remains one of the premier disciple making and church planting organizations in the world, 150,000 church, 3 million disciples in the last 18 years making for Kingdom ROI of $500 per church and $24 per disciple.

Roy is madly in love with Candy, his wife of 48 years and golf, in that order! He has 4 grown and married children and nine beautiful grandchildren all living in the KC area.

The theme of Roy’s life can be described as an addiction to creating disciple making movements (DMM). Over the past 10 years he has traveled to world studying the great movements of the gospel in Indonesia, India, Africa, South America and Europe. These travels have lead to the development of a Hybrid Strategy at Shoal Creek and the dedication to see movements of disciple making in the US begin out of Kansas City.

Roy is a board member of New Generations (formerly Cityteam International), member of the East Clay Rotary Club and serves on the board of Institute of International Medicine.

My life verse is Acts 13:36:  For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers.  I hope the same can be said of me!

Dr Elaine Metcalf will share with us about Pro Deo youth ministry.
Inline imageInline image
Dr. Elaine Metcalf is a compassionate educator with more than 30 years of experience as a former teacher and administrator for Lee’s Summit R-7.  Dr. Metcalf began her “second career” in nonprofit management taking on the role of executive director for Pro Deo Youth Center.

Pro Deo is seen as a partner in surrounding teenagers with adult support when the problems of teenagers seem bigger than they can handle.  At its core, Pro Deo is about keeping our teens safe from harm to themselves or harm to others.  But what gets the teens through the doors is the fun activities planned and free tutoring sessions.

Pro Deo Youth Center is poised to significantly grow acute prevention services for teens and families living in Jackson County.  In 2023 Pro Deo was identified as a transformational program by the state of Missouri and the City of Lee’s Summit for providing critical services that build resilience for underserved teens in our region.

Ms. Vanessa Hickman has spent over 30 years in the social service sector working and advocating for the homeless, those struggling with substance misuse, alcohol, mental health, and the youth. She has worked as an Intake Specialist, Case Manager, both as a Project Manager and Director as well as an Interim Executive Director.  Vanessa has lived in the community of Lee’s Summit for almost 20 years and enjoys serving as the Chair for the Human Relations Commission, Public Safety Advisory Board, Ministerial Alliance and several other Lee’s Summit nonprofit Boards.  Vanessa Hickman recently joined Links2LeesSummit working on special projects and is excited to be the new Community Relations Manager for both Pro Deo Youth Center and Rediscover.

Pro Deo Youth Center

Pro Deo Youth Center is a youth development prevention program that eliminates a strain on a community especially following the pandemic. There are no other non-profit organizations that provide supervised and free after-school and summer programs in eastern Jackson County. We not only keep teens safe but we connect teens and their families to much needed resources like those offered at ReDiscover Behavioral Health.

free counseling & tutoring

safety and security

exposure to community professionals/careers/activities

alternative activities for after school  and summer

prevention services for youth mental health

donated funds go immediately to programming

ALL AT NO COST TO STUDENTS/FAMILIES

Pro Deo is celebrating 15 years as the only free after school program for high school students in Eastern Jackson County. Our program attendance has doubled since this same time last year and we are serving more teens than ever before. This shows us that teens want and need a safe place to spend their out of school time to meet likeminded peers and gain new experiences they may not otherwise have access to due to family circumstances. With our established programming and success in serving teens, we already have the knowledge in place of what we have learned and how to build a similar program in surrounding communities.

Based in Lee’s Summit, Pro Deo has 200+ registered teens for the 2024/2025 school year to date. Of these, 50% are in the low income population. Lee’s Summit may appear to be an affluent community, but this perception often masks the challenges faced by those experiencing poverty, making the disparity even more significant for those affected. Many teens, especially those from low income backgrounds, lack access to career exploration, professional networks, and hands-on training. This program connects teens with local employers, providing direct pathways to sustainable careers.

The Wesley Place project is designed to provide Pro Deo Youth Center with a purpose-built facility to significantly expand and enhance its programs and services. The Wesley Place will be a 5,895 square foot facility, doubling Pro Deo’s current space. This will allow the center to serve up to 88 teens at one time, doubling our current capacity. The facility will include tailored spaces for counseling, tutoring, a makerspace, workforce readiness zone, outdoor recreation, study pods, kitchen and dining areas. Pro Deo has already acquired the land for the new facility.  The construction will include building the facility from the ground up, incorporating modern design elements to optimize space and functionality.

Pro Deo is always looking for volunteers to lead activities, tutor, or be a driver.  Applications and background checks can be found under SUPPORT on Pro Deo Youth Center website.
