Matt Thomas Founder and Executive Director of Firm Foundations Ministry will share with us about this ministry.

As a former convict who found God and reaped the benefits from an aftercare program in Arizona, Matt saw the great need for a similar kind of program here in the Midwest after moving to Wichita in 2011. After two years of prayer, planning, brick walls, and dead ends, God’s spirit began to move in a mighty way. An unlikely team of people was brought together, and doors that had been closed for years began to open.

Matt and his wife Ashley live in Shawnee, KS, with their two young sons. They have also been blessed with three grandsons from their older daughters. Matt is as a published author.  He also preaches and consults with organizations focusing on re-entry programming and church planting.

As the Executive Director of Firm Foundations Ministry Matt provides visionary leadership and oversight for the ministry.

Jason Neland Executive Director of On Eagles Wings will share with us about this ministry.

Jason and Courtney began their journey in prayer almost 18 years ago not long after they were married as they sought to live a life fully serving Christ while reaching out to those who were less fortunate in the community.  Both had experienced homelessness in one form or another and wanted somehow to help those who struggled with the same issue.

They ended up purchasing a four-plex, The Firehouse, in Kansas City, KS and starting Carry The Cross Ministries, a non-profit organization set up for the purpose of bringing in families who were homeless or needing a fresh start while also reaching out to and connecting with the community around them, shining the light of Christ through whatever means possible. They have also hosted many young adults who have aged out of the foster care system or were struggling with adult life. It’s been an amazing journey so far!

Over 20 families and numerous individuals have stayed in The Firehouse for up to a year at a time.  Life has definitely been a continuous adventure as their cul-de-sac has had a long history of gangs, drugs and prostitution.  Though they have seen many trials, the blessings have been abundant.  Praise God their neighborhood is continuously seeing positive changes and the community is really coming together.

Different activities that have occurred over the years have included: Friday Night Fires, where all in the neighborhood are invited to a bonfire with food and fun, Easter outreaches such as egg hunts and carnival type activities, weeklong neighborhood VBS outreaches sponsored by area churches and weekly and monthly programs and outreaches for children, youth and their families.

One of their greater goals is to find and meet physical, spiritual and emotional needs through building friendships with their neighbors.  Some of the ways they accomplish this is through a community garden which helps build relationships and a food pantry thanks to a partnership with Harvesters for those with emergency needs.

Post Covid they have turned much of their focus to serving those in need of mental health services, shelter insecurity and mentoring the youth who are involved in their programs.

Their future hope is to expand to a farm type community called On Eagle’s Wings Farm where families can live together serving at-risk, foster and orphan children and their families.

A verse that is super relevant in our lives right now is Galatians 6:9-10. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.  So then while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially those who are of the household of faith.

In the face of the adversity that we are facing on so many levels, our prayer is to Keep on Keeping on, bringing His love, light and grace to those who are desperately in need, no matter if the worldly outcome is amazing or not.
